Austrian Dog Food Market
From Statista, in 2019 13% of the Austrian population had a dog. This is compared to 30% of the countries population who are cat owners. These numbers are considerably lower compared to their neighboring country, Germany.
Dog food in Austria is typically sold at retail shops, but now the market has slithered into the supermarkets, hypermarkets and convenience stores.
Furthermore, special or so-called ‘healthy dog foods’ are now also provided in veterinary clinics. Also, there is now a huge online market for high-quality pet food.
As dogs are increasingly viewed as family members, rightly so, owners are now very considerate about the health and nourishment of their pets. This makes the owner look for some high-quality premium foods rather than settling for the supermarket options.
Austrian Dog Food Market Trends
People love their dogs and are willing to spend money keeping them healthy. It’s no surprise that key trends in dog food processing mirror trends in human food: clean label, alternative proteins and more healthful ingredients and processes.
Dog owners have gradually started humanizing their pets, considering them a part of their families. Many dog owners live by the word: “What’s good for me is also good for my dog”. They are increasingly seeking healthy foods and want to purchase only the best for their beloved animal companions.
Consumers don’t want traditional dog foods. They want healthy ingredients and most importantly, they want to understand the ingredients list. Moreover, dog owners in Austria are now opting for more fresh, frozen and made-to-order diets for their pets.
E-Commerce continues to gain popularity and is affecting other channels. Although premium dog food products are available at many more points of distribution than ever before like in mass merchants and grocery stores, e-commerce is increasing and targeting the millennial generation of dog owners.
Why High-Quality Dog Food is so Important
For dog lovers, knowing what is the best food for their pet is important. Managing your dog’s health starts with their diet. And, it’s important to know that not all pet foods are created under the same standards, rules and protocols.
Many foods will provide and meet the basic requirements to sustain life however, higher-quality foods will result in optimal dog nutrition.
The proper balance of nutrients is essential when feeding your dog. You must ensure that your dog gets enough water, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins.
These essential nutrients are required as part of the dog’s regular diet and are involved in all of the basic functions of the body. Without adequate nutrition, your dog would not be able to maintain muscle tone, build and repair muscles, teeth, and bone, perform normal daily activities with ease or fight-off infection.
One definite way any pet owner can affect the longevity and quality of life for their pet is by providing the highest quality food they can. The quality of the food you feed makes a direct difference in your pet’s health.
The old saying “You are what you eat” applies to our pets in the same ways as it does for ourselves. When you feed your dog high quality food, you will notice a wide range of benefits.
Let’s take a look at those benefits:
Controlled Weight and Good Muscle Tone
Switching your dog to a high-quality food diet helps maintain a healthy body weight. Dog food that contains fillers and preservatives would leave your pet sluggish, overweight, and at risk to a lot of health issues.
High quality foods are rich in protein which is integral in building skin, hair, muscles, organs and other tissues. Feeding your dog a high-protein diet ensures that it is able to build and maintain strong muscles.
Additionally, it helps maintain lean body mass while shedding extra fat.
Appropriate Energy Levels
Your dog needs the appropriate amount of nutrients from a food source that can be absorbed by the body and converted into energy and metabolism for life.
Low quality foods, especially dry food, can be hard for a dog’s digestive system to truly break down and glean nutrients from. Whereas high nutrient foods are more digestible, which enables your dog’s body to absorb more energy from the food they’re eating.
This means that more of the food they eat gets transferred into useable nutrients, and thus, energy and optimal health.
Just as a healthier, more natural diet improves the overall quality and health of our bodies, the same is true for your furry friend!
Think about how you feel when you eat a whole and nutritious diet versus how you feel when you eat a diet packed with junk food. Your body needs real nutrition that provides necessary vitamins and minerals and so does your dog’s.
Is Feeding High-Quality Worth it?
Feeding your dog a high-quality, healthy food should be as important as feeding your kids fruits and veggies. So, if you want to see positive effects of dog nutrition in the bodies and minds of your dog, make sure you’re feeding your pet with its best interests in mind.
The dog food market is growing rapidly, and higher quality foods are becoming more readily available, making it more convenient and easier to ensure your dog is getting the best. Furthermore, if you have any questions about a particular food, you may seek the assistance of your veterinary health care team.
All this being said, it is important to remember that our dogs rely on us to make the right choices for them. Providing them with a high-quality diet is one of the most important choices we can make for our furry, four-legged pet we view as our extended family members.
