Purina Dog Food pride themselves on providing deliciously nutritious dog food to loving dog owners who are concerned with their pet’s nutrition.
A well-invested company, who loves pets as much as we do at Dog Food Info!
In this article, we will review the Purina dog food brand and aid you in making a more informed decision on the types of food your dog deserves.
Purina Dog Food Quality
By product innovation, Purina has been able to create new ranges for specific canine diets. This includes diets for allergen reduction, healthy ageing, digestive health, probiotics and even a custom range.
Purina Dog Food Nutrition
PROTEIN – Purina puts protein in every single recipe. Protein provides a strong foundation for your pet’s nutrition. The image below shows some of the proteins sources which can be found in Purina dog food.
However, when conducting deeper research on particular Purina foods, the protein and meat source on their declaration isn’t always clear. Not fully understanding what your dog is eating is worrying.
CARBOHYDRATE – Purina only selects carbohydrate sources that deliver sustained energy to pets. The image below shows the types of carbohydrates which can be found in Purina foods.
Some carbohydrates are unfortunately used as fillers in dog food to compensate for the lack of meat. We do not agree with this approach.
FATS AND OILS – Purina sources include nutrient-rich fats and oils, with known benefits for pets.
However, too much of one particular fat or oil could have an impact on your pet. Therefore, its always best to check and avoid brand with excessive amounts.
Manufacturer's information and AAFCO
According to our research, Purina has made a few claims with AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies. Members of AAFCO are charged by their local, state or federal laws to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.
Purina is therefore required to regulate their products according to the standards put in place by the AAFCO.
The AAFCO is an important association to be a part of for dog food brands around Europe. As a pet owner in Europe, you should be concerned about whether or not your dog’s food is regulated. In the same way that humans consumable goods are vetted, the same needs to be done for dog food.
Purina Dog Food's Sustainability
Purina is very attentive to the production of their products. Sustainability is literally built into their company ethos. The company sources ingredients from local, responsible suppliers. This reduces energy, water and waste.
It also means that they support local businesses, improving overall growth for not only themselves, but the economy too.
A fun fact: 80% of Purina’s packaging is from recycled sources.
As the world becomes more and more environmentally conscious, it is refreshing to know that sustainability is a priority for a dog food brand like Purina.
They have also passed hints that they plan on improving these numbers in the future. Thus creating better, healthier, sustainable products which are nutritious for our dogs and healthy for the planet.
Dog Food Info's Rating on Purina
Overall, the Dog Food Info Team is impressed by the Purina philosophy and commitment to dog nutrition they have given over the years. They are a dedicated company which has stood the test of time.
The brand has innovated for over 100 years and have a team of dedicated dog lovers continuously looking to improve upon their already well-built success.
After examining some of their product ranges in more detail, their declaration is a little vague for our liking and they do offer a large range of dry food, where we don’t necessarily agree with (you can find out why, here).
However, overall we have given them a score of 7.8 / 10.
Compared to other dog foods available in Europe, like Anifit (which has a very high meat content and 100% natural ingredients), we would position the Purina range as an ‘average’ dog food available in Europe.
In other words, there are better on the market, but there are also a lot worse!
