Top 5 Best GPS Dog Fences of 2024

GPS dog fences are among the hottest pet tech trends, and for a great reason! Unlike traditional fences (or even other types of electric fences for dogs), these modern GPS-based systems are much simpler to use. There’s no need for digging or burying wires. With just a collar and an app, you can establish safe boundaries for your dogs in minutes.

The downside? You really have to make sure you choose a stellar brand with a great reputation. Your dogs’ safety (and maybe even their lives) depends on it. That’s where we come in. Our team of dog-loving experts tested and reviewed 11 different GPS dog fence models over the last few years. Read on to see which exceeded our high expectations, starting with a quick overview of the top 3.

Let’s take a closer look at some of these features, pros, and cons.

Detailed Overview of Halo

Creating a virtual fence in Halo collar app

As mentioned above, this collar is so much more than just a wireless dog fence. So, if you’re looking for something more comprehensive when it comes to keeping your dog safe, this is it. It has a live Patented GPS tracker, so you can track their activity on the accompanying app to see what they’re up to whenever you like. Unlike other GPS-collar-based fences, Halo Collar doesn’t rely on Cellular and Bluetooth signals alone.

Halo Collar’s technology includes Wi-Fi signals that are critical in many scenarios, such as when your dog is at home (where cellular reception may be limited). Additionally, Halo Collar’s PrecisionGPS™ AI technology and active antenna let you keep tabs on your pet in any location automatically. This machine learning is also used to differentiate between direct signals and those bouncing off obstacles (like buildings and tree cover).

The GPS in Halo Collars relies on signals from over 150 satellites to show your dog’s exact location and connects to up 35 satellites at one time (only 4 are needed to triangulate a location).  As a result, you get more accurate location details with the Halo Collar 3 GPS Dog Fence than with any other GPS collar. It automatically connects to any cellular network in any location (If you are out of Bluetooth range and not on a WiFi network, the collar will default to an LTE/Cellular connection. If the Halo Collar is connected over LTE, it will update the data and location on the app every second).

The app has lots of cool features, too, like the whistle feature, which is exactly what it sounds like – encouraging your dog to come back to you when you’re out and about together. This is not only great for walkies and escape artists, but good for training youngsters, too.

The collar is also nicely designed and comes in four beautiful color options; sunburst, graphite, ivory, and orchid, for those of us owners who like to show off our dog’s personality and want something a little more stylish looking, because most GPS & invisible fence collars can tend to look a bit boring!

Halo Collar is also compatible with a wide range of dogs, with a Small size that fits dogs between 11” and 15”, and a Medium/Large that fits dogs between 15”-30.5”. Dog owners who are in between sizes are recommended to go with the Medium/Large option, as Halo Collar also allows you to trim down the collar if it’s too large for your pup, making it a highly versatile wireless dog fence for large dogs.

Halo Collar 3’s no dig GPS Wireless dog fence does triple duty, providing customers with a GPS Dog Fence, Cesar Millan’s expertly crafted in-app training program, and detailed statistics on your dog’s activities.

As far as drawbacks go, there are a couple of minor ones. First, there’s the cost. While the price dropped quite a bit since the Halo Collar was first released, it’s still rather expensive compared to some models.

Also, again, you need a subscription even just to activate this GPS pet tracker. Although it’s an added cost to unlock some additional features, such seeing your dog’s location at any time, which is useful if your fence is large, receiving notifications if your collar battery is low or your dog escapes, tracking your dog if he escapes.

I do like that they give you plenty of options in terms of plans, though. The Basic Plan is only $5.99 per month which gets you always-on GPS and real-time location tracking so your dog is always safe

The other major drawback, in my opinion, is the lack of correction levels compared to SpotOn (15 compared to 30). Halo Collar 3 has three escalating levels to keep dog in: audio > vibration > optional static, with return whistle to guide dogs back to safety. As mentioned above, while the Halo Collar 3 does offer optional static feedback, Halo Collar’s in-app dog training is based on positive methods only, not fear-based corrections.

Read my detailed Halo Collar 3 review for more details and make sure to get it from the official website only to avoid scammers and resellers.

Guardian® GPS + Tracking Dog Fence Collar | PetSafe®

  • AccuGuard™ Technology uses AI tech to predict your dog’s movements
  • Quick charging within 2 to 4 hours
  • 48-hour battery life

  • No removable covers on the static prongs
  • Subscription required

Detailed Overview

The Guardian GPS + Tracking Dog Fence Collar by PetSafe offers real-time GPS tracking, ensuring you can always monitor your dog’s location. The customizable virtual fences are a fantastic feature, allowing you to set boundaries tailored to your property and your dog’s roaming habits.

A standout feature of this collar is the patented AccuGuard™ technology, which uses AI to provide enhanced accuracy, ensuring your pet is precisely protected. It’s so advanced that it can even predict your dog’s movements ahead of time.

The collar is rechargeable (with a battery life of up to 48 hours) and waterproof, making it perfect for outdoor use in all weather conditions. The setup is straightforward, and the My PetSafe® app makes managing the system easy and user-friendly.

However, there are a few downsides to consider. The collar requires a subscription for GPS tracking, which adds an ongoing cost. This is becoming more and more common, though, and at $9.99 a month, the price is comparable to other brands.

Another potential drawback is that it’s only suitable for dogs over 20 pounds, limiting its use for smaller breeds.

Finally, the lack of prong guards, unlike the Halo Collar 3, is a downside. While you can set the correction level in the app and even disable static correction, having prong covers would add an extra layer of protection between your dog and the collar.

Despite these drawbacks, the Guardian GPS + Tracking Dog Fence Collar is a robust and reliable option for those seeking advanced pet tracking and security. Plus, it’s from PetSafe, a brand with a very long reputation for creating quality products, so you know you can trust it.

3. SpotOn Collar (2nd Runner Up for 2024)

SpotOn GPS Collar & Invisible Dog Fence

While SpotOn slipped down a notch after PetSafe released their Guardian GPS dog collar, it’s still a very solid option and a very close 3rd place winner.

HOT TIP: Save $25 by using the code BARK!

Standout Features of SpotOn

  • Create and store up to 20 unique fences
  • Covers .5 acres up to thousands.
  • Create “Keep Out zones” with a swipe of a finger.
  • Patented True Location™ GPS technology improves accuracy.
  • Forest mode enhances GPS reception in areas with lots of trees.
  • Sizes fit dogs with necks ranging from 10-26″
  • 22-hour battery life when used as a fence (14 when tracking)
spoton collar app, setting up a virtual fence

Pros and Cons at a Glance

Pros

  • Draw fences anywhere (even over streams)
  • Draw boundaries on the app without walking the property.
  • More levels of static correction than the competition.
  • Connects to 25-30 satellites for real-time tracking and monitoring.
  • You don’t need a subscription to use it as an invisible fence.
  • Only takes one hour to fully recharge

Cons

  • Priciest option overall
  • No Indoor detection when Forest mode is activated.
  • Subscription needed for GPS tracking features.
  • You also need a cell phone to track your pup.
  • Doesn’t fit small-breed dogs (like Chihuahuas).
  • Can’t use in yards smaller than 1/2 acre.

Let’s take a closer look at some of these features, pros, and cons.

Detailed Overview of Wireless Fence Features

As I mentioned, setting up the invisible fence system is a breeze. Just walk the boundary and see it built in real-time on the app. You can also draw an instant fence in the app without walking your property, which is a major plus for those with mobility issues.

I love that SpotOn dog fence collars have 30 levels of static correction, which is twice as many as Halos. With proper training, you can set it at an extremely low level so it’s not quite as shocking (literally and figuratively) when your dog gets too close to the boundaries.

As with any product (even the best of the best), there are some drawbacks. First, while you don’t need a subscription to use the virtual fence features, you do need one (as well as a cell phone) if you want to track Fido beyond your set boundaries.

That’s pretty common with all GPS collars, but Spot On’s subscription is one of the pricier options for a dog tracker. I HIGHLY recommend going with a 2-year subscription because it’s almost half the price of a month-to-month plan.

4. Tractive Collar (Best Budgeted Pick)

I am checking the current location of my Jack Russel Terrier with Tractive

Okay, so Tractive isn’t technically a TRUE GPS fence in the way that Halo and SpotOn are. But for those who don’t have $600+ to drop on an invisible fence system, it may be the perfect option. Let’s find out why.

Standout Features of Tractive

  • Fits nearly any collar (I would say ANY collar, but there’s always an exception)
  • Doubles as a GPS tracking device AND an activity monitor (including a sleep monitor that lets you track your dog’s sleep patterns).
  • Set up five GPS barriers that can be labeled as safe zones and no-go zones for your fur buddy.
  • Comes in two models: the original Tractive for dogs 9+ lbs, and a new larger size for larger breeds (40+ lbs).
  • Connects to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile LTE across the United States and in 150+ countries
  • Family sharing option lets you connect one collar to multiple apps.
  • 100% waterproof
  • Live mode feature gives you updates on your dog’s location every two-three seconds.

Pros and Cons at a Glance

Pros

  • Incredibly affordable, especially compared to other GPS dog fences.
  • Long battery life (10 days for standard, 1 month for XL)
  • At 3.2oz, it’s lightweight compared to other GPS dog fences.
  • Uses its own embedded SIM card, so you don’t need a cell phone to use it.
  • No smartphone required. You can access all of the app’s features in a desktop version.
  • XL model includes a light and sounds to help you locate your dog quickly

Cons

  • You need a subscription to use it at all (versus just needing one for certain features)
  • Doesn’t prevent dogs from leaving boundaries.
  • Limited coverage in some areas.
  • Somewhat confusing subscription pricing structure.
  • Allows for fewer boundaries overall than Halo and SpotOn.
Creating virtual fence with Tractive

Detailed Overview of Tractive as a Virtual Fence

Tractive is primarily intended to be a GPS Tracking Collar, so its invisible fence features are fairly limited. In some cases, though, those limited features are really all you need.

For example, say you live in a rural area (or at least far enough from a main road) and allow your dog to wander off-leash. However, you want to make sure he doesn’t wander too far. In that scenario, you could easily create boundaries in the Tractive app and get alerts when Fido crosses them.

To increase battery life, Tractive also includes a feature that allows you to connect the tracker with up to five Wi-Fi networks in secure locations where your pet spends a lot of time, such as at home or at a pet daycare.

Tractive also pairs well with the next GPS dog fence on our list (more on that in a moment).

Check out my detailed Tractive collar review for more information on the standard model, or my Tractive XL review for more on the larger model.

GPS Tracker for Dogs – Long Battery Life | Tractive

Designed for pups over 40 lbs., the Tractive XL takes everything you love about the original Tractive GPS dog tracker and scales it up for our BIG dogs! In addition to the larger size, it also features a longer battery life (up to one month on a single charge).

5. Pawious Dog GPS Fence Collar

Pawious GPS fence

I was on the fence (pun intended) about including the Pawious dog GPS fence on this list. On the one hand, it has some serious limitations compared to SpotOn and Halo. On the other hand, though, it’s one of the most affordable options for those who need more than Tractive offers.

Standout Features of Pawious

  • Uses a built-in GPS chip to monitor your dog’s location.
  • Emits three different types of warnings (sound, vibration, and shocks) when Fido leaves his boundaries.
  • If Fido doesn’t return to the yard, the collar emits a continuous beep. Not only does this remind your dog that he’s out of bounds, but it can also help you locate him.
  • Works on smaller yards than SpotOn and Halo (99-3280 ft radius). .
  • Built-in memory function retains settings even after the battery dies.

Pros and Cons at a Glance

Pros

  • Waterproof IPX7 design
  • No app required. The collar IS the entire system.
  • One of the most affordable GPS dog fences on the market.
  • One of the few true GPS fences designed for small yards.
  • Lasts 36 hours on a full charge.
  • Super easy to set up. The collar will even help you calculate the distance between two points.

Cons

  • Only 6 levels of static correction
  • Does NOT work as a tracking collar
  • Limited range. It doesn’t work well in woodsy areas.
  • Doesn’t fit small-breed dogs.

Detailed Overview of the Pawious GPS Fence Features

While Pawious isn’t really my favorite invisible dog fence by a long shot, I included it for three reasons. First (and most obvious), it’s fairly affordable at just around $130. Sure, it’s not the ONLY cheap GPS fence, but compared to competitors in the same range, it’s the best-reviewed one overall.

Second, you don’t need a huge chunk of property to use it. It works on yards with as little as a 99-foot radius. For those who skipped geometry, that means that as long as your yard is roughly 198 feet from end to end, you can use this collar.

Last, you don’t need a smartphone. In fact, Pawious doesn’t even HAVE an app. You don’t even need a subscription to use it. It’s perfect for those who just want to contain their dog without all of the bells and whistles.

But all of that convenience comes with a few major drawbacks. The biggest issue of all is that Pawious alerts your dog when he leaves the boundaries…but it doesn’t alert YOU (unless you happen to be close enough to hear the beeps). If Fido keeps going, you can’t use this collar to find him.

That said, you could use Tractive in conjunction with Pawious and get the best of both worlds for a fraction of the price. You can also use an Apple Airtag (at your own risk, as Apple adamantly states that Airtags are NOT meant to track pets). Just make sure you get a good Airtag holder to go with it.

GPS Dog Fences FAQs

How does a GPS Dog Fence work?

A GPS dog fence uses a collar with GPS to create virtual boundaries. If the dog crosses them, the collar emits a warning signal. It’s a wireless alternative to physical fences, offering freedom with safety.

Do they really work?

GPS dog fences can be effective for many dogs when used correctly. However, their success depends on proper training and the dog’s temperament. Some dogs may not respond well, so individual results may vary. Always consider your dog’s needs and personality when deciding on a containment system.

Can a dog run through a GPS fence?

Yes, a dog can run through a GPS fence if they are not properly trained or if they are highly motivated to chase something or escape. The warning signals and static corrections from the collar serve as deterrents, but they may not stop a determined or overly excited dog in some situations. Training and supervision are key to success.

Is a GPS dog fence a shock collar?

A GPS dog fence typically includes a collar with warning signals and static corrections to deter dogs from crossing boundaries. While it does provide static corrections, it’s not primarily a shock collar. The goal is to train the dog and keep them safe within predefined areas, rather than to cause harm.

Is a GPS fence for dogs reliable?

The reliability of GPS dog fences depends on several factors, including the quality of the system, proper installation, and effective training. In general, they can be reliable for many dogs when used correctly. However, individual results may vary, and some dogs may require more training and supervision to ensure consistent effectiveness.

Final Recommendations

GPS dog fences can make your life significantly easier, but you do need to be choosy about which model you go with.

For those on a tight budget that don’t really need a tracker/activity monitor, Pawious will probably do just fine.

If you just need something that alerts you when Fido leaves the yard (and don’t necessarily need to contain him), Tractive is more than enough.

However, if you’re willing to spend a little more on something that does more than just contain your pooch in your yard, Halo or the Guardian by PetSafe really are the best of the bunch (with Halo coming out ahead by a nose).
